At Suburban Water Technology, Inc., (SWT) we understand exactly how important clean drinking water is. It’s used in virtually every industry and business in one way or another. Industrial uses, however,  often require a level of purity that exceeds the standards of homeowner tap water, as commercial uses can require highly specified useability levels. Tap water isn’t pure water (H2O). It can contain a multitude of other substances, such as, chemicals, minerals, and sediment. These impurities need to be removed allowing for use in a commercial setting. Osmosis removes the impurities by passing the water through a porous membrane resulting in much cleaner water.   A semipermeable membrane allows water but does not allow other substances to pass through the membrane;  osmosis is a great method for water filtration and purification.  Terms like semipermeable, solvent, solution, and osmosis are intimidating scientific jargon. Let’s cut through all that scientific talk and get to the core message those terms are trying to convey. CLEAN, USEABLE WATER. We will also share with you the practical uses of commercial reverse osmosis systems and the benefits a commercial RO system provides you and your company.

The Reverse Osmosis (RO) Process

Imagine going to the beach and putting a towel over a bucket, then pouring water from the ocean over it. The water would pass through the towel into the bucket, leaving the sand, seaweed, and pebbles on your towel. Reverse osmosis filters work in such a way.

Water is forced through a semipermeable membrane to separate the pure water from the contaminants. The water will pass through it, and the contaminants won’t pass through, creating very purified water. The reverse osmosis process is often combined with other water filtration and purification methods like using carbon or mechanical filtration to provide even further filtration and cleaner water.

With various membranes coupled with additional treatment, SWT can create a custom reverse osmosis system to meet your company’s exact needs.

Reverse Osmosis System Applications

Commercial reverse osmosis systems are used in various commercial and industrial applications. Different industries have different water purification needs. RO systems can be adapted to a wide variety of filtration requirements, making it the perfect solution for an array of commercial uses.

Commercial RO System Applications:

  • Food and Beverage Industry: Businesses must adhere to FDA regulations when manufacturing food and beverages. Water purity is important for ensuring their products don’t contain contaminants at levels above FDA guidelines. It’s also vital for taste consistency. Impurities can make water taste salty, metallic, or like chemicals. Pure water ensures taste purity.
  • Pharmaceutical Companies: The chemical compounds used in pharmaceutical drugs can be affected by water impurities. Even washing equipment with water that isn’t pure enough can negatively impact the efficacy of medications, depending on the impurities present. Regulations are also very strict in this industry.
  • Semiconductor Manufacturing: Semiconductors are very sensitive. Rinsing parts used in semiconductor manufacturing require ultrapure water, which is thousands of times cleaner than everyday drinking water.
  • Technology Manufacturing: Other components of technological devices are just as sensitive as those of semiconductors. Using tap water in the manufacturing process could allow sediment and contaminants invisible to the naked eye to scratch or otherwise damage these sensitive electronics.
  • Reverse Osmosis System Benefits

Commercial RO systems provide you and your business with many benefits including the following:

    RO System Benefits:

    • Environmentally friendly process.
    • Harsh chemicals are no longer needed to treat the water.
    • The system removes chemicals that distillation would leave behind.
    • The system can be tailored to your exact needs.
